The weather has been so nice lately! Wylo my Beagle loves to go out on the deck and lay in the sun.
Remembering one of my customers fair skinned pets from a few years past-I put some sunscreen on Wylo's tummy, inside thighs as well as her nose and ears.
Yes-dog's and cat's can get sun burnt just like us. Just like us they can also get skin cancer.
Any dog who spends a lot of time out side can get sun burnt. However some dogs are more susceptible than others to burn.
Short Haired, no haired, white haired, light haired and those that have suffered fur loss due to allergies, hot spots or medical treatment. Are highest on the list but even the super thick or furry dogs can get sun burnt .UV radiation can pass through windows as well as being reflected off water, sand, concrete, etc...
Signs that your pet has sun burn:
Red skin, hair loss and in severe cases sores/blisters. The nose, ends of the ears, around the mouth and eyelids ,tummy, inside legs, groin are all areas that are prone to sun burn because they have little or no hair and the skins pigmentation is low. The best way to prevent sunburn
Keep your pets inside during the hottest part of the day. If they are outside dogs make sure they have a covering or a shaded area they can be in.
Always remember :

Slip, Slop, Slap in the summer
slip on a t-shirt
slop on some sunscreen. One for dog's or sunscreen for babies without PABA or zinc (both are toxic to dogs).Reapply when you reapply yours. Sometimes sooner if they are lickers.
slap on a hat and sunglasses (Doggles for dogs are great!)
Happy Tails and many wags
